Semax

Overview

Semax is a heptapeptide based on the ACTH(4-7) sequence (Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro). Originally developed in Russia and approved there for clinical use in stroke and traumatic brain injury, it has since been studied extensively for its nootropic and neuroprotective properties.

Research Context

The most robust research on Semax covers its ability to upregulate BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) and NGF (nerve growth factor) — two critical proteins in neuronal survival, plasticity, and cognitive function. Human clinical studies conducted in Russia documented improvements in cognitive performance, attention, and memory in healthy subjects as well as in those recovering from ischaemic stroke. Animal models have shown neuroprotection against oxidative damage, improved recovery following spinal cord injury, and anxiolytic effects without sedation. Its ACTH-derived backbone gives it the ability to engage melanocortin receptors, contributing to its nootropic profile.

Oral Capsule Format

Semax has traditionally been administered intranasally.
