Overview
Epithalon (also known as Epitalon) is a synthetic tetrapeptide with the sequence Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly. It was developed by the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology based on research into the pineal gland’s role in aging and circadian regulation.
Research Context
The primary research interest in Epithalon centres on its ability to stimulate telomerase activity, the enzyme responsible for maintaining telomere length. Studies by Khavinson and colleagues documented telomere elongation in human somatic cells treated with Epithalon in vitro. Additional research has investigated its effects on melatonin production, circadian rhythm normalisation in aged subjects, antioxidant enzyme activity, and neuro-endocrine regulation. Lifespan extension has been observed in several animal models. The compound has also been studied in the context of retinal degeneration and oncostatic activity.
