Overview

GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1) is a 30-amino acid incretin hormone secreted by L-cells in the intestinal mucosa in response to food intake. It plays a central role in post-meal glucose regulation and has become the most commercially and scientifically significant peptide class in contemporary metabolic research.

Research Context

GLP-1 exerts multiple coordinated effects on metabolic regulation: it potentiates glucose-dependent insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells, suppresses glucagon release, slows gastric emptying, reduces appetite via central hypothalamic pathways, and promotes satiety. Preclinical and clinical research has extended beyond glycaemic control to document cardiovascular benefits (reduced MACE events in the LEADER and SUSTAIN-6 trials for GLP-1 analogs), neuroprotection, and potential application in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Native GLP-1 has a half-life of under 2 minutes in vivo due to DPP-4 degradation; the research peptide provides the intact native sequence for in vitro and mechanistic study.
