Melanotan-2

Overview

Melanotan-2 (MT-2) is a synthetic cyclic lactam analog of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), a naturally occurring peptide that activates melanocortin receptors. The cyclised structure confers substantially greater potency and metabolic stability compared to the native hormone.

Research Context

Melanotan-2 is a non-selective melanocortin receptor agonist with activity at MC1R, MC3R, MC4R, and MC5R. Research has covered several distinct pharmacological areas: melanogenesis (MC1R-mediated tanning response without UV exposure), sexual function (MC4R-mediated effects on arousal and erectile function — which formed the basis for Bremelanotide/Vyleesi, the FDA-approved drug), appetite suppression and energy homeostasis (MC3R and MC4R), and neuroprotective mechanisms. Its multi-receptor activity profile has made it one of the more widely studied peptides in the melanocortin system literature.

MT-2 has traditionally been administered subcutaneously.
